Genre: Poetry Rating: 🌟🌟/5 “Love in Between” by Mercy Jane Porquez Ballesteros is a very short collection of poems & short stories about love & lose. I’m not sure if I should really say that it’s a “quick read” though. I’ll do my best to explain. To start off, let me start with the GOOD qualities. The poetry has massive potential. The writer’s inspiration of Shakespeare really shows. With this being said, I firmly believe that with a bit of work, some of Mercy’s work could be astounding and thought provoking. There seems to be a great line of thought behind the plot being set up in “Love in Between”, but doesn’t have much to back it up. Some of the “not so good” aspects: Translation
or autocorrect maybe? Either way, this book has a few editing errors that made the reading seem iffy, & uncomfortable. Typically these errors can be over looked, but being that an older style of English is used, these errors could alter the overall meaning that Mercy is trying to portray. That’s just the poetry side. On the short story side, it doesn't really feel like a story. More like extremely short diary entries that sort of have incomplete thoughts. They also have what seems to be cliff hangers for endings. Personally, I have no idea what to make of some of it. I want to like it, but I also just really feel like there are so many unanswered questions. I probably wouldn’t recommend this book to many people. It’s not enough of a book for me to want to brag about any of it. It’s more of a book that I’d read once and then forget on a shelf until I moved. I’d give it a 2 star rating, and even that is being generous in my opinion.
