The Red Rising is a story of a boy fighting for love, fighting to right the wrongs in a casted society. Darrow is a boy who wants to sit quietly and live in peace. This becomes a terribly difficult task when he is thrown into accomplishing his wife's dream...the dream of a fair world where they aren't casted about as slaves. He must change everything about himself and live through the eyes of a gold man. He must become a superior being. Can Darrow be better than a red? Can Darrow break the chains that enslave him & everything he loves?

I was recommended the Red Rising by a very dear friend of mine. While I enjoy Sci-fi fantasy novels, I was a bit unsure of this one. I'm so glad I stuck with it though despite my odd feelings. The Red Rising is a powerful novel that will have you sitting at the edge of your seat, page after page, as it throws you through a trillion different loops that you never even expected. The characters are a love hate kind of thing. I love Darrow's will & how love moves him. Just as he spoke of Eo, "I live for you." and he does, in all aspects. That doesn't go without saying that he makes some horrible decisions & has a major anger problem that he has difficulties controlling. Throughout the novel more charaters are introduced, all who grow endlessly with personalities & stories of their own. Pierce does an outstanding job with his writing style, showing how actual teenagers think. Also showing how anyones mind can adapt in certain situations.

There are some triggers though. The Red Rising can be gory and very descriptive. There is quite a bit of cussing as well. Personally the worst part was that rape is mentioned as happening in the novel. It doesn't go into detail but it is there as it happens, there is discussions on punishment, & everything about it. I would highly recommend this to anyone who loves Scifi Fantasy or who loves rebellion type novels. Even if you don't love stories such as these, I would recommend this to everyone to at least try. Pierce has a way of making it a novel of all genres. Take a chance at being, "the hammer that cracks the chains".
